The Birthright Citizenship Act aims to restrict automatic U.S. citizenship to only children born in the United States with at least one parent who is a citizen, lawful permanent resident, or serving in the military. However, denying citizenship to children born on U.S. soil to undocumented immigrants would upend a long-standing constitutional principle and adversely impact thousands who know no other home. Many of these children have grown up as Americans, attending our schools and contributing to our communities. Stripping them of their citizenship rights would be an inhumane policy that runs counter to our nation's values of equality and inclusion. Instead of pursuing divisive measures, we should focus on comprehensive immigration reform that keeps families together and provides a pathway to legal status for those already living and working here. Protecting the 14th Amendment's guarantee of birthright citizenship preserves the American dream for future generations.
