Protect SNAP Funding and State Budgets: Oppose Cost-Shifting Measures

I am writing to express my deep concern about the proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the potential devastating impact on state budgets and higher education funding. The policy framework recently signed by President Trump, which aims to cut billions from nutrition programs to offset tax cuts for the wealthy, is a misguided approach that will harm our most vulnerable citizens and jeopardize our state's financial stability.
The projected $120 billion in savings over 10 years comes at an unacceptable cost. Starting in fiscal year 2028, states will be required to pay a portion of SNAP benefits based on their error rates. With 42 states and the District of Columbia currently having error rates above 6%, this shift will force many states, including ours, to make impossible choices between reducing essential SNAP benefits or cutting other critical discretionary spending, particularly in higher education.
Higher education funding, already a frequent target for budget cuts, cannot withstand further reductions. At a time when the demand for educated workers is growing, cutting both SNAP and education funding will severely hamper access to higher education and workforce development. This short-sighted approach will ultimately undermine our state's economic growth and the self-sufficiency of our citizens.
I urge you to work with your colleagues in Congress to reverse these cost-shifting provisions before they take effect. Instead of burdening states with unsustainable financial responsibilities, we need a collaborative approach to improve SNAP error rates without compromising the program's vital support for our communities.
Access to food assistance is fundamental for enabling people to focus on work and education. By preserving SNAP funding and protecting our state's budget, we can ensure that our citizens have the resources they need to pursue higher education, contribute to our workforce, and build a stronger, more resilient economy for all.
I implore you to stand against these harmful cuts and advocate for policies that invest in our people and our future. The well-being of our state and its residents depends on your leadership in this critical matter.
