This team was one of the government’s most effective, modernizing outdated systems, saving taxpayer money, and improving how millions of Americans interact with essential services. Their work on Login.gov and other digital platforms made government simpler, safer, and more efficient. In 2024 alone, they led over 30 projects that delivered measurable results. Yet in March 2025, 18F was shut down overnight by the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, under orders from the Trump administration. Nearly 90 staff were locked out of their systems with no warning. The excuse? They were deemed “non-essential”—a laughable claim given their track record of saving money and delivering results (Barron’s, March 2025). This isn’t about efficiency. It’s about control. Eliminating 18F is a political decision, not a performance-based one. Trump and Musk targeted a high-functioning, nonpartisan team because it didn’t fit their narrative.
