An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Oppose Medicaid Cuts — Millions of American Citizens Depend on It

5 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

congress I am writing to urge you to fiercely oppose any cuts to Medicaid and to block the imposition of new work requirements for US citizens to receive continued aid.  This obscene proposal will harm millions across our nation including my aging family members. If Medicaid is gutted, many elders could not only lose access to critical care, but also their homes in their nursing facilities. Eliminating or reducing Medicaid coverage would cause profound hardship and destabilize many families across our nation. As of 2025, approximately 79.4 million Americans are enrolled in Medicaid, encompassing a diverse population of low-income families, children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Notably, Medicaid finances about 42% of all births in the United States, ensuring maternal and infant health care during critical periods. Additionally, nearly 49% of U.S. children are covered by Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), highlighting the program's pivotal role in pediatric health. For the elderly, Medicaid covers over 60% of nursing home residents, providing essential long-term care services. The GOP's proposed budget aims to slash $715 billion from Medicaid over the next decade, a move projected to result in 8.6 million Americans losing their health coverage, marking it as one of the most significant Medicaid reductions in U.S. history.  The proposed 80-hour monthly work requirement would disproportionately punish low-income Americans but especially low-income people who struggle with chronic health issues who have been unable to qualify for disability due to the rigorous demands and years it often takes to even be denied coverage.  These mandates are absurd and inflexible. Plus considering that so many businesses are struggling to keep their doors open due to the prohibitive tariffs Trump has already enacted, I question where these 80 hours of work could even come from for many people. For many Americans, Medicaid is not simply one possible option out of many for healthcare, it is a critical support system with no alternatives. Weakening or dismantling Medicaid betrays our elders, families, and the very social contract this country has been proud to uphold for nearly 60 years.  As our elected official and representative for our honorable state, I urge you to vote no. I also beg you to speak out publicly, and do everything in your power to block this heartless proposal.  As your constituents, we are watching. It’s my sincere hope that you do what is best for the majority of Americans instead of enabling the greed that puts the needs of a few billionaires and their completely unnecessary tax cuts above our entire country.
