An open letter to the U.S. Supreme Court

Rebuke LAPD protest threats, uphold First Amendment rights

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The LAPD's threatening announcement from a helicopter about identifying protesters and "coming to your house" is an alarming violation of constitutional rights to freedom of speech and assembly. This chilling threat of police surveillance and retaliation against those exercising their First Amendment rights is fundamentally undemocratic and authoritarian. Such intimidation tactics have no place in a free society. The protests over immigration policies were an expression of political views protected by the Constitution. Attempting to deter this lawful expression through thinly veiled threats undermines core democratic values. Law enforcement exists to uphold rights and maintain public safety, not chill free speech through disturbing overreach. This incident demands a firm rebuke and clear policies to prevent any further abuse of power against those voicing dissent. Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of American democracy that must be safeguarded, not menaced by those sworn to protect constitutional liberties. An immediate commitment to respecting civil rights and allowing unfettered peaceful assembly is urgently needed to restore public trust.
