It is deeply concerning that the Texas Attorney General is suing the federal government over requirements to provide LGBTQ+ affirming placements for foster youth. This lawsuit directly undermines the wellbeing and best interests of some of our most vulnerable children. Denying LGBTQ+ youth supportive and accepting foster placements will likely lead to increased risks of mental health issues, homelessness, trafficking, and suicide among this already marginalized group. Furthermore, failing to comply with the federal rules could cost Texas over $400 million in annual funding for its foster care program. Rather than prioritizing harm reduction and trauma-informed care for LGBTQ+ youth, this lawsuit seeks to enshrine discrimination under the guise of ideology. We must resist such attempts and instead enact policies grounded in evidence that protect the rights and welfare of all children, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Safeguarding the dignity of LGBTQ+ foster youth is not only the ethical course of action, but an investment in their future and the future of our communities. I urge you to stand against this lawsuit and advocate for the implementation of the federal guidelines to ensure every child has access to an affirming, loving home.
