On May 16th, Representative Pramila Jayapal and Senator Bernie Sanders will release their companion Universal Single Payer Healthcare bills to Congress. I am your constituent and want you to know I have had enough of the current healthcare system. I am tired of unneeded medical bankruptcies, health care options determined by 900 private insurance companies that pick and choose what they think is medically necessary instead of my doctor, and over 400 bills in each Congress that are all band-aids trying to fix little bits of the healthcare system.
We are a major industrialized power in the world and choose not to protect our citizen’s health. Each of our 35 industrialized peer nations has recognized the need to have a healthy population with universal healthcare except us. Every nation’s life expectancy declined during the pandemic, but only our life expectancy continues to decline; theirs are on the rise. I can go on and on about higher rates of infant mortality, maternal mortality, and huge numbers of deaths amenable to treatment, but people can’t get treatment because they have no insurance or are underinsured.
