An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Strengthen public health agencies, don't cut HHS workforce

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical importance of robust public health infrastructure and a strong workforce at agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services. Cutting 10,000 jobs and consolidating divisions risks undermining the department's ability to effectively respond to future health crises. Rather than downsizing, we should be investing in expanding the capabilities and manpower of public health agencies to bolster preparedness for the next pandemic or outbreak. Reducing headcount and oversight capacity now would be a step backwards that leaves the nation more vulnerable. A well-funded and staffed HHS is essential for safeguarding public health through prevention, early detection, and coordinated emergency response efforts. I urge against proceeding with these cuts and instead call for strengthening this vital department to protect American lives.
