I’m writing to urge you to oppose S.5384.
This bill, which seeks to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, poses a serious threat to the quality and fairness of education across the country.
While decentralization may sound appealing, it would create a chaotic patchwork of state systems where students in underfunded areas are left behind.
We need a consistent, strong federal standard to ensure that every child—regardless of their zip code—has access to a quality education.
The Department of Education plays a vital role in safeguarding equal opportunities for students, enforcing civil rights laws, and supporting low-income schools.
Eliminating it would not only abandon these responsibilities but also burden other agencies with tasks they’re not equipped to handle, creating costly inefficiencies.
Education is the foundation of our country’s future, and we can’t afford to gamble with it. Please stand up for students, families, and teachers by voting against S.5384. Let’s work toward solutions that strengthen our schools, not dismantle them.
