I am writing to express my strong opposition to Governor Mike Dunleavy's recent suggestion that Alaska could become a leader in farmed salmon production. This proposal threatens our state's thriving wild salmon industry, our environment, and our cultural identity.
Alaska has wisely banned salmon farming since 1990 due to well-founded environmental and economic concerns. The risks associated with introducing farmed salmon into our coastal waters are simply unacceptable. These risks include pollution from fish waste and medications, as well as potential devastating impacts on our wild salmon populations.
Our wild salmon industry is not just an economic powerhouse; it's a cornerstone of Alaska's identity. The 'Wild Alaska' brand is recognized worldwide for its quality and sustainability. Introducing farmed salmon could severely undermine this brand and potentially collapse prices, jeopardizing the livelihoods of countless Alaskans who depend on the wild salmon industry.
While Governor Dunleavy claims he wants to explore economic opportunities, the fact is that our existing wild salmon industry already provides significant economic benefits. Moreover, the majority of Alaskans, including scientists, wild salmon advocates, and restaurant owners, strongly oppose this idea. Their expertise and concerns should not be ignored.
I urge you to stand firm on Alaska's existing ban on salmon farming. Instead of pursuing risky and unpopular farming practices, we should focus on enhancing and protecting our wild salmon populations. This approach will ensure the long-term sustainability of our fisheries, preserve our unique ecosystem, and maintain Alaska's reputation as a source of premium wild-caught salmon.
The governor's office has already faced strong opposition to a bill authorizing land-based farming of non-salmon species. This new proposal for salmon farming is even more controversial and potentially harmful. I ask that you vocally oppose any attempts to introduce salmon farming in Alaska and work to protect our wild salmon heritage for future generations.
