In 2020, three years after Trump's decision to repeal the individual mandate, Insurance companies reported a record $1.17 BILLION dollars of PROFIT. This was in the wake of the pandemic, when many people had become unemployed. So was the individual mandate really necessary?
If you ask anyone who supports the mandate, you'll hear the usual jazz about how the individual mandate helps conpensate poor insurance companies, who are really put out by having to cover pre-existing conditions apparently. But if you think about this, does it make sense? Are we really supposed to believe that insurance companies are hurting for money?
The individual mandate is a handout to big corporations. It doesn't even do what it's supposed to do. For example, a person living in a city might take advantage of free or low cost programs to take care of their health. Such a person would then run afoul of the individual mandate, and have to pay a fine. For what, not lining the pockets of a private corporation?
Often times insurace plans available through contracting work, which is the only kind of work most people can get, are low-quality, high-deductible plans, which require people to shell out thousands of dollars before they see any financial benefit from the plan. Meanwhile, most Americans live paycheck to paycheck and can't even cover an unexpected $500 expense.
Repeal the individual mandate. It is harmful. It doesn't make sense. It punishes people for being poor.
