SOMETIMES SIMPLY DOING THE JOB CAN SAVE YOUR COUNTRY

Tough week in the GOP Senate. Deadline fast approaching for passing Trump’s OBBBA. It’s intended to be the president’s celebration of July 4. You know, the continued wrecking of the lives of American citizens in the name of shared austerity.
Kidding. It’s not shared.
But a problem has arisen in the form of a federal employee actually doing their job as required under our Constitution. Who knew the Senate parliamentarian might be the hero we’ve been waiting for?
She’s doing the job lawmakers should have already done. Or, more likely, she’s doing the job you knew you should be doing but chose not to…making sure that proposed legislation might actually fly under established rules.
Kidding again. The OBBBA is obviously a fairy dust compilation of every fever dream ever imagined by the GOP, with a few even more callous, lawless and long-held fixations held by our current president thrown in.
But the parliamentarian remains unswayed by all the machinations surrounding her. And because of this fealty to the rules that govern the government, she is keeping y’all honest. And giving you a no-doubt much desired way out of some of the current mess the House sent you.
Plus there is now someone else to lay the blame on. Win-win.
I wonder how long it will be before the president launches his social media feed against her? How long before the attacks begin?
How long before yet another exemplary example of what government service should aspire to gets put before the proverbial firing squad?
Kidding. I expect it’s already well under way.
Every time I read about someone doing the work they are required to do, even though it releases the hounds of hell on them for doing so, my faith in American democracy gets a bit stronger.
But it’s sad that simply doing the right thing has come to be considered courageous. This is the sorry state we find ourselves in.
Here’s hoping it might be contagious.
