Today I take pen in hand to write and ask you to support and vote yes on the TERM Act.
It’s become clear that powerful moneyed interests with un-democratic views have used the Supreme Court to work their will upon the US code of laws. The time has come to eliminate lifetime appointments for the High Court, to avoid the multi-generational damage that the far right members of the court have caused.
Supreme Court justices currently serve for life, leading to tenures that now average over 25 years. This creates an unpredictable confirmation process where the timing of vacancies depends on death or retirement rather than any regular system.
As you may know already, The TERM Act would establish 18-year term limits, allowing each president to appoint two justices per term and creating predictable vacancies every two years.
Term limits would reduce the incentive to appoint younger and younger justices purely for longer tenure. They would also decrease the political temperature around each nomination, since no single vacancy would reshape the court for decades.
Most democracies with constitutional courts already use term limits or mandatory retirement ages for exactly these reasons.
This reform doesn't require a constitutional amendment and maintains judicial independence while making the court more accountable to democratic processes.
If we hope to keep our democracy into the next 250 years, we must make reforms to the Supreme Court. Congress is the voice of the people in making and reforming laws, not the Supreme Court. Please press for the TERM Act in the next session, and vote YES.
Thank you.
