The decision to exclude the League of Women Voters from the Glen Ellyn Fourth of July Parade is deeply concerning and appears to be a violation of their constitutional rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. As a respected, nonpartisan civic organization dedicated to encouraging informed participation in government, the League's presence in such events should be celebrated as a reflection of democratic values, not viewed as a political statement. The lack of transparency and accountability from the parade committee regarding the alleged incident is troubling, especially when it results in the exclusion of a century-old organization from a public, taxpayer-supported event. No substantiated evidence or documentation has been provided to support the claim that League volunteers engaged in harassing behavior during the previous year's parade. I urge intervention to ensure a fair and open process for community participation in the parade, upholding the very freedoms it is meant to celebrate. Exclusion of the League amounts to viewpoint discrimination and infringes on their constitutionally protected rights. A reconsideration of this decision is warranted to prevent the marginalization of nonpartisan civic voices and protect the League's ability to carry out its important mission.
