Executive Order on Timber, Safeguarding Public Lands and Ethical Governance

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the recent Executive Order dated March 1, 2025, which calls for the immediate expansion of American timber production. While I understand the importance of supporting domestic industries and creating jobs, I am deeply troubled by the potential implications of this order, particularly in light of the reported hiring of Tom Schultz, a timber industry lobbyist, to lead the U.S. Forest Services.
The decision to appoint Mr. Schultz, who has a background in lobbying for the timber industry, raises significant questions once again about conflicts of interest and the prioritization of commercial interests over the sustainable management of our public lands. Our national forests are invaluable resources that provide ecological, recreational, and cultural benefits to millions of Americans. Placing someone with strong ties to the timber industry in a leadership role within the Forest Services could undermine the agency's mission to balance conservation with responsible resource use.
Furthermore, this move appears to align with the broader goals of "Project 2025," a conservative initiative that seeks to roll back environmental regulations and prioritize economic development over conservation. While economic growth is important, it must not come at the expense of our natural heritage or the long-term health of our ecosystems. The aggressive expansion of timber production, coupled with reduced regulatory oversight, could lead to deforestation, habitat destruction, and increased vulnerability to wildfires.
I urge you to:
1. **Investigate the Appointment**: Request a thorough review of Tom Schultz's appointment to ensure that it adheres to ethical standards and prioritizes the public interest over industry influence.
2. **Assess the Executive Order**: Evaluate the potential environmental and economic impacts of the March 1, 2025, Executive Order, particularly its alignment with sustainable forest management practices.
3. **Promote Transparency**: Ensure that any policies related to public lands and timber production are developed through a transparent and inclusive process, with input from conservationists, scientists, and local communities.
Our public lands are a shared national treasure, and their management must reflect the values of stewardship, sustainability, and equity. I trust that you will take these concerns seriously and work to uphold the integrity of our natural resources for future generations.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I look forward to your response and any actions you may take to address these issues.
