Meaningful, implementable gun reform

We need MEANINGFUL, implementable gun reform. The majority of Americans, including gun owners and people of all parties, want commonsense enforcement: stronger background checks. Focus on that. We could do the most good by prohibiting the sale of guns to people with a history of domestic violence or harm toward animals. Close the “Boyfriend” loophole. We need to address the behaviors that are most likely to be lethal with a weapon rather than focusing solely on a type of weapon. Although assault weapons play an outsized role in most (not all) mass *public* shootings, the majority of gun violence is with non-assault weapons, in homes, by intimate partners or family members. It is also my understanding that the previous assault weapon “ban” really only prohibited certain features; once it was law, manufacturers simply removed those features and continued selling their products. It did not reduce the number of weapons. The attempt to “ban” assault weapons feels justified, but given today’s Senate and Supreme Court makeup, it is unlikely to succeed and more likely to be eventually overturned. Better to focus your political capital on measures that would be effective and have broader support. People are open to some real reform right now, more than they have been since the Sandy Hook tragedy; I implore you to focus on ways of making ACTUAL meaningful, lasting change.
