I join the Ohio Education Association in its condemnation of HB 616 which OEA condemns in the strongest terms possible. OEA President, Scott DiMauro says, “…we need pro-public education policies that enable students to think critically about the world around them and empower them to be proud of who they are, regardless of where they come from, what they look like, how they express their gender identities, or who they – or their parents – love.” Regardless of the age/grade level stipulations inside it, this bill will have a negative impact on the well being of all LGBTQ youth who already struggle with depression at rates higher than their peers. The CDC reported in 2014 that 29% of LGB youth had attempted suicide. This rate will only increase with the passage of a bill like this.
