An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures

Repeal Anti-Transgender Bathroom Laws

78 so far! Help us get to 100 signers!

Work toward the full repeal of laws that criminalize transgender people's use of public restrooms. These laws were never about safety or privacy — they are about making transgender people unwelcome in public life, the same logic that once kept Black Americans out of public spaces. Courts across the country have flagged these statutes as constitutionally indefensible, and law enforcement agencies have repeatedly testified that they present significant practical enforcement challenges. The harm is concrete and escalating. In states where these laws are in effect, transgender people face misdemeanors, felonies, and in some cases exposure to persistent violator statutes that carry life sentences — simply for existing in public. Provisions requiring DNA testing to determine restroom access tell you everything about what these laws actually are. This is criminalization of identity, and no state should be in the business of it. I expect you to take a clear public stand against these laws and push for their repeal wherever they exist.
