DOJ Crisis: Stop the Weaponization of Law Enforcement and Protect the Press

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is currently overseeing a documented erosion of institutional competency and the rule of law. Recent actions under Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicate a shift from the impartial administration of justice for the people toward the use of federal power for political retribution. The following developments require immediate Article I oversight: - First Amendment Violations: The DOJ has issued grand jury subpoenas to news organizations, targeting records of journalists who reported on internal administration deliberations. This follows the executive branch identifying news articles as "treason"—a term with a specific, narrow constitutional definition that does not include investigative journalism. These actions create an unconstitutional chilling effect on the free press. - Politicized Prosecution of the SPLC: On April 21, 2026, the DOJ announced an 11-count indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). By framing standard investigative methods—such as using confidential informants to monitor extremist groups—as "wire fraud" and "money laundering," the department is attempting to criminalize civil rights oversight for political reasons. - Institutional Staffing and Competency Crisis: The DOJ is currently facing an unprecedented staffing shortage, reportedly losing nearly half of its career attorneys due to the department's shift toward politically motivated actions and a departure from institutional competency. In response, the department has revoked the requirement for newly hired prosecutors to have at least one year of experience and is offering $25,000 signing bonuses. This lowering of professional standards, coupled with reports of hiring based on ideological alignment, threatens the department’s ability to function as a neutral law enforcement agency. These actions represent a failure of governance that invites expensive, avoidable litigation at the taxpayers' expense. I urge you to: 1. Demand a Permanent Nominee: Insist that the executive branch submit a formal nominee for Attorney General to end the "Acting" end-run around the Senate’s Advice and Consent role. 2. Investigate DOJ Recruitment: Launch a Judiciary Committee inquiry into the lowering of professional standards for federal prosecutors and the use of taxpayer funds for ideological hiring bonuses. 3. Protect Press Freedom: Demand an immediate audit of all subpoenas issued to news organizations to ensure they comply with constitutional protections for journalists. The integrity of our justice system depends on its independence from executive whim. I look forward to your prompt action on these matters.
