An open letter to State Legislatures (W.V. only)

Please Vote NO on HB5319

3 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I'd like to encourage you to vote NO on HB5319 that would criminalize homeless encampments on public property. While I would like to see public spaces be usable and safe, we should first be good humans and make it a priority to help those in need. These encampments exist because of a lack of infrastructure and funding to care for homeless West Virginians, many of whom are Veterans who are suffering from injuries and illnesses acquired during their service. Many shelters have specific requirements that bar individuals from staying there. There are requirements ranging from requiring individuals to cease drug or alcohol use, despite little to no support to do so (which is nearly impossible) to things as simple as not allowing pets in the shelter, when for many, their pets are the only reason they're still alive. If we want to see an end to homeless encampments, or homelessness in general, we need to build support into our communities, rather than criminalize those who are already down on their luck. It would mean a great deal to many West Virginians and set a good example for others if you would sponsor bills that would help build these support networks. For now, I'm asking you to vote NO on HB5319.
