An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Where Are Our Priorities? Explain This to the American People.

I am demanding an answer: How is there money to put Donald Trump’s name back on the Kennedy Center, but supposedly not enough money to feed hungry children, provide healthcare, repair our roads and bridges, or properly support our deployed service members? The Kennedy Center board has voted to re-add Trump’s name to the building and rename its grounds “President Donald J. Trump Plaza,” despite serious questions about the board’s legal authority to do so. Meanwhile, Americans are being told to accept cuts and shortages. Families are struggling to afford groceries and healthcare. Children are going hungry. Our infrastructure continues to deteriorate. Service members are deployed around the world and deserve every resource, benefit, and support we can provide. Yet somehow, there is time and money for political spectacle and the glorification of one man. Explain that. Now. Government exists to serve the American people—not to build monuments to a convicted criminal’s ego. I want Congress to explain why political branding is being treated as a priority while fundamental needs are being neglected. Where is the same urgency for hungry children that exists for putting Trump’s name on a building? Where is the urgency for affordable healthcare? Where is the urgency to fix unsafe roads and bridges? Where is the urgency to ensure our troops have everything they need? And if Congress believes this spending is justified, tell us exactly where the money is coming from, who is paying for it, and why it takes priority over the needs of Americans. Our national institutions should belong to the American people—not function as billboards for whichever president happens to occupy the White House. I expect Congress to put people before politics, public needs before presidential vanity, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars before political theater. Stop wasting our resources on ego-driven projects while telling Americans there isn’t enough money for the basics. Feed our children. Protect our healthcare. Fix our infrastructure. Support our troops. Put America first—not one narcissistic man.
