An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Congress Must Reassert Its Constitutional Authority

10 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I’m writing as a constituent who is deeply concerned about the erosion of constitutional checks and balances. What we are witnessing is not a normal policy disagreement between branches of government. It is a steady consolidation of power in the executive branch, paired with lawlessness, cruelty, and disregard for constitutional limits. In moments like this, Congress’s role as a co-equal branch of government is not only important—it is essential. I urge you to continue pressing for Congress to reclaim and exercise its core constitutional authorities, particularly over appropriations, tariffs, and war powers. These are not abstract powers; they are safeguards meant to prevent exactly the kind of unchecked executive behavior we are seeing now. I am especially alarmed by reports of abuses by ICE, including unlawful detention, family separation, and credible findings by human rights organizations documenting torture and other violations. Congressional oversight and meaningful limits on ICE’s authority are urgently needed to protect civil liberties and the rule of law. I also believe Congress must take seriously its responsibility to investigate and, where warranted, pursue impeachment of executive officials whose actions have endangered lives, violated the law, or undermined public trust. This includes serious and credible concerns surrounding Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary Kristi Noem, and Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. When senior officials act beyond the law or in ways that threaten public safety, Congress has both the authority and the obligation to respond. Accountability is not partisan—it is foundational to democracy. I know this is an exhausting and frightening time to serve in public office. Please know that many of us see your efforts, value your courage, and are counting on Congress to hold the line. Defending the Constitution now will shape what kind of country we remain on the other side of this moment. Thank you for your continued service and for standing up for democratic governance.
