An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Reject anti-transgender discrimination in Congress facilities

H.R. 1579 - Restoring Dignity and Privacy in Congressional Facilities This bill, H.R. 1579, prohibits members, officers, and employees of the U.S. House of Representatives from using single-sex facilities that do not correspond to the sex they were assigned at birth in the Capitol and House Office Buildings. Such policies target and discriminate against transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. Denying access to facilities matching one's gender identity promotes an exclusionary environment and can lead to stigma, harassment, and negative mental health impacts. I urge the rejection of this discriminatory legislation that undermines equal treatment. Efforts should instead focus on creating an inclusive workplace reflecting respect for diversity and human rights.
