An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
Protect Western PA OPM workers
2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
After yesterday's press conference with President Trump, Elon Musk has said some blatantly untrue things about OPM in an attempt to get the general public to turn on all of those federal employees.
1. Musk said that there was a maximum of retirements that can be processed in a month (10,000). This is factually false. There is no set number of people that can "only" retire within a given month.
2. There was talk of an mine elevator shaft and if the elevator breaks, those retirements don't get processed. This is genuinely a lie because there is no elevator and it isn't THAT kind of mine. Not only are you able to drive into it, it's walkable. The limestone mine in which OPM in Boyers has their office was chosen for a number of reasons, one being that limestone actually preserves paper. So those paper files he was mentioning are more secure there than anywhere else they could be.
3. He complained about the files not being digitized. So essentially, the files they have underground may be taking up space, but it is required by congress to hold paper copies for record retention. Not only that, it is a foolproof way of avoiding having PII (or personally identifiable information) from being stolen in the event of a hack.
4. Quite possibly the worst of all, Musk tweeted a birds eye view of the facility and said "if you're upset about how they're spending their money, here's where their office is" essentially saying GO GET EM to anyone that may be unhappy with how OPM is spending their money.
5. He SEIZED everyone's information ILLEGALLY at OPM's office in DC and now has every OPM worker's name, phone number, address, direct deposit information, social security number, and so much more. This includes current employees AND retirees. Oh and he took everyone's info that's on social security too.
Rep Kelly, I hope you understand that Musk's actions directly affect YOUR constituents in western PA. If you have any sort of conscience, you know that this is NOT right and needs to be addressed. What are you doing to protect these federal workers and their personal information?
