As public servants, USAID employees are dedicated to upholding the values of human dignity and democracy that our nation stands for. However, the Trump administration's actions to slash USAID's workforce and funding threaten to undermine years of progress in international development and humanitarian aid efforts worldwide. It is Congress' duty as a co-equal branch of government to exercise its power of the purse and prevent the President from unilaterally defunding programs that have already been authorized and appropriated. The courts have provided some temporary reprieve, but a lasting solution requires Congressional intervention. The mass terminations and furloughs of thousands of USAID personnel, many with decades of expertise, represent an unconscionable brain drain that will cripple the agency's ability to carry out its vital mission. Moreover, the abrupt suspension of foreign aid projects disrupts life-saving work and damages America's credibility as a global leader. These detrimental impacts extend far beyond USAID, jeopardizing strategic partnerships, destabilizing regions, and undermining U.S. national security interests. Congress must act swiftly to protect USAID and its workforce from the administration's reckless actions. Legislation explicitly prohibiting the diversion or recission of congressionally approved funds is urgently needed. Rigorous oversight through hearings and investigations should also be exercised to scrutinize the legal and policy justifications for these damaging cuts. The American people are counting on their representatives to uphold democratic principles and curb executive overreach that threatens the nation's core values and interests abroad. Swift, decisive action is required to halt this self-inflicted wound to American leadership and restore USAID's ability to promote global peace and prosperity.
