An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Support Trans Rights and Recognize Trans People's Humanity

4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am writing to urge you to oppose anti-trans legislation and support policies that protect transgender people in our community. Recent events in Chicago demonstrate why we must reject harmful rhetoric that dehumanizes trans individuals. On a cold day at Lake Michigan, Lio Cundiff, a 30-year-old trans man and Chicago comedian, jumped into frigid water without hesitation when an 8-month-old baby's stroller was blown into the lake by strong winds. While the mother stood frozen in shock, Cundiff dove in, holding the stroller upright and keeping the baby's face above water even as they both went under several times. He treaded water for minutes until they were rescued by ladder. Both were transported to hospitals and recovered. Cundiff told the Chicago Tribune his only thought was getting the baby out safely, saying if she went down, he would go down with her. This act of heroism reveals an important truth. As Cundiff told the Guardian, he hopes this moment emphasizes that trans people are just human beings doing human acts. Trans people are our neighbors, coworkers, and community members who contribute positively to society every day. They are people like Cundiff who risk their own lives to save others. Yet across the country, legislators are advancing bills that restrict healthcare access, limit participation in public life, and send the message that trans people are somehow less deserving of dignity and protection. These policies are not based on facts or community safety. They are rooted in fear and misunderstanding. I urge you to stand against any legislation that targets transgender individuals and instead support policies that affirm their rights and humanity. Trans people deserve the same respect, protection, and opportunities as everyone else. They are not a threat to our children. As Cundiff demonstrated, they are the ones saving them. Please commit to opposing anti-trans legislation and supporting the full inclusion and protection of transgender people in our state.
