The collapse of the Forbes bridge in Pittsburgh today just highlights the terrible state of America’s infrastructure. I think there is bipartisan agreement on that, highlighted by the infrastructure bill passed last year. It’s a good start, but so many state transportation departments are planning on using those funds for new construction including highway expansions. This is unfathomable with so much of our current infrastructure crumbling and so many bridges ready to collapse like the Forbes bridge. I urge you to pass a moratorium on states and municipalities using any federal transportation funding, including ones in the infrastructure package of 2021 on expansion. Funding should be 100% allocated to repairs and maintenance until local roads, bridges, and mass transit infrastructures are in good shape before a single dollar is spent on anything that expands capacity.
