An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Condemn and Cease the Unjust Arrests of Elected Officials

24 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I am outraged by and condemn the escalating pattern of federal agents arresting elected Democratic officials, a deeply troubling development that undermines the fundamental principles of our democratic society and the rule of law. Most recently, on June 17, 2025, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander was arrested by masked federal agents inside a Lower Manhattan immigration court building at 26 Federal Plaza. Comptroller Lander was attempting to escort an individual from their court appearance. Lander repeatedly asked agents to show a judicial warrant and asserted that they did not have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens. He was subsequently handcuffed and escorted into an elevator. This incident follows a concerning trend of federal agents targeting elected officials who are attempting to exercise oversight, advocate for constituents, or bear witness to government actions. Just last week, U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) was tackled and handcuffed by federal agents when he tried to question Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during an immigration-related media event. Separately, Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) faced federal charges after attempting to visit a privately operated migrant detention facility in Newark, an incident in which the mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, was also arrested, though the trespassing charges against him were later dropped. These arrests, particularly of public figures acting in their official capacities or in defense of public interests, are a grave misuse of power and constitute an alarming attempt to intimidate and silence legitimate political discourse and advocacy. As Comptroller Lander himself stated, he was present to "bear witness and try to stand up for the rule of law". I demand an immediate end to the harassment and arrest of elected officials who are fulfilling their duties to their constituents and upholding the rule of law. Such actions are an affront to democracy and represent a dangerous precedent of government overreach. Congress must call for a thorough and independent investigation into the conduct of federal agents involved in these arrests, particularly regarding the use of force and the justification for charges. Demand accountability for any federal agents or officials found to have acted improperly or to have abused their authority. Establish clear guidelines and protections to ensure that elected officials can perform their duties, including oversight and advocacy, without fear of unlawful detention or arrest. Uphold the constitutional rights of all individuals, including the right to due process and freedom from arbitrary detention. I stand in solidarity with Comptroller Brad Lander, Senator Alex Padilla, Representative LaMonica McIver, Mayor Ras Baraka, and all elected officials who courageously stand up for justice and civil liberties. I urge you to address these egregious actions immediately and decisively to protect the integrity of our democratic institutions.
