I am writing to you out of deep anger and heartbreak. There have already been 46 school shootings in the United States this year alone. Forty-six times children, teachers, and families have been terrorized. Forty-six times lives have been shattered. And yet, Congress continues to fail to act with the urgency this crisis demands.
We need gun control. We want gun control. We want our kids to be safe at school. We want to be safe when we go to the movie theater. We want to be safe when we go to the grocery store. The simple truth is: Americans cannot feel safe anywhere when weapons of war and easy access to firearms flood our communities.
Thoughts and prayers are not enough. Vigils and moments of silence are not enough. The only thing that will stop this epidemic is bold, meaningful legislation that puts people over profits and lives over lobbyists. Congress must immediately:
• Pass universal background checks.
• Ban assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.
• Enforce mandatory safe storage laws.
• Close loopholes that allow dangerous individuals to obtain firearms.
Every day that you fail to act, more families are destroyed. Our children deserve better. Our communities deserve better. America deserves better.
You have the power to save lives. Use it. We demand that you stand up, be courageous, and finally put an end to this preventable crisis.
We cannot wait any longer. We need gun control now.
