Prioritize community investment over border militarization in Texas

I understand the request for $11 billion in federal reimbursements is to cover costs incurred by Texas for border security operations and wall construction. However, if these funds are received, they should be allocated towards social programs that directly benefit the people of Texas, rather than serving business interests or further militarizing the border region. With over $3.6 billion spent on National Guard deployment alone, redirecting even a portion of those funds could provide immense support for education, healthcare, housing assistance, and other vital services that uplift communities. Border security is an important issue, but a long-term solution lies in addressing the root causes that drive migration, not in perpetuating cycles of enforcement that strain resources without offering sustainable solutions. A comprehensive approach focused on improving economic opportunities, strengthening regional partnerships, and promoting human rights would be a more effective use of these funds. The well-being and dignity of all Texans, regardless of immigration status, should be the priority. I urge you to carefully consider how best to invest these potential reimbursements in a manner that upholds our shared values of compassion, equity, and human dignity.
