I urge you to delete all monies for new nuclear weapons from the base military spending bill for the Department of Energy and to demand more money for human needs, less money for militarism, in the budget resolution. As Chair of the Senate Subcommittee over Energy, you have the authority to prepare an initial budget that does not include the billions President Biden has asked for to expand the US nuclear arsenal. Production of new nuclear weapons, at an eventual cost of $1.7 trillion, will escalate the arms race, increase the odds of a catastrophic accident and risk global annihilation. Should the U.S. pursue this “nuclear modernization” plan, it will be in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) that requires nuclear nations to pursue nuclear disarmament. No money for new nuclear weapons!
According to the Poor People’s Campaign, 87-million Americans lack adequate health care coverage, 11 million are homeless, and 40 million are food insecure. Let’s address urgent needs at home and abroad, not build more weapons of mass destruction!
Thank you for your past opposition to new nuclear weapons production.
