I am writing to you today regarding Trump's cruel edict that foreign students at colleges and universities taking their classes entirely online must leave the US.
I am a professor at a school that is going entirely online. As you know, LA County (where I live and teach) is seeing massive spikes in COVID-19 cases. This is the right decision, because bringing students back to campus is dangerous. We are being forced to choose between treating all our students with dignity or doing what is right for community health. With embassies closed worldwide and travel bans in effect, there is no guarantee that students who are forced to leave would be able to return once they are gone. ICE should ensure that international students are safe while accessing their education. They should make a temporary exemption to their rules to allow international students to continue taking online classes. Congress must do everything in their power to pressure ICE to reverse their decision and adopt a more humane policy. They are not only putting immigrants at risk, they are putting hundreds of thousands of American faculty and students at risk of catching the coronavirus.
