In recent days the world has become outraged at the most visible acts of police brutality towards our black brothers and sisters. However, many other acts of police brutality go unnoticed daily. It is time that we spend more time training police to help them eliminate racial bias and handle escalating situations better without having to kill innocent black men. There is no reason for black men to be forced to live in such fear. We are taught that the police protect us, when in reality they protect a system. This system is built upon racism and discrimination and serious changes must be made. We also give way to much funding to the police. What is it funding? Police officers clearly dint get enough training, but instead they have massive amount of riot gear while healthcare professionals can't even get simple PPE. We fund law enforcement so much, while some of that money could go towards
funding better programs that focus on security without police and supporting mental health. What if we funded social workers to help deal with a mental illness issue instead of treating that person like a criminal. Along with defunding the police we could also focus on decriminalizing things like sex work, drug addiction, and simple vehicle violations. In some case people need help, not punishment. We put to much funding into the police and not enough funding to get people the help they need. I look forward to a future where my fellow humans do not have to worry about being targeted by police for the color of their skin.
