An open letter to State Governors

Use Emergency Powers to Release Michigan ICE Detainees

2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

In light of the current public health emergency, I urge you to use your emergency powers as Governor to release all people currently held in ICE detention in Michigan. The threat to their health and safety, and to that of Michiganders who work in the detention facilities, is too great. We know that the vast majority of immigrants return for their court dates when allowed to live in the community. With COVID-19 spreading and our public health officials urging people to distance themselves from one another, it makes good sense to release these detainees to prevent the virus from spreading in detention facilities. If the facility were on fire, you would not hesitate to evacuate it to save people's lives. Immigrant's lives are at stake right now. Remember, Anne Frank didn't die in the gas chambers, she died from an infectious disease while detained. Please use your power to prevent detainees in Michigan from meeting the same end.
