I am proud to be a citizen of my adopted state: Pennsylvania. I am proud to walk Philly's streets in good times with friends and in times of unrest with allies. I've always felt safe and I've always appreciated the respect law enforcement has always shown me, my friends, and those I protest with. I attribute a large portion of their behavior to excellent training, which should expand and continue. However, I become aware, far too often, that the country, state, and city that respects my rights are treating people who aren't straight white males very differently. That's why I'll be out protesting this afternoon. I want to urge you to look at the research and recommendations of Campaign Zero. They promote ten policy solutions to improve policing by limiting police interventions, improving community interactions, and ensuring accountability. I'm proud that PA has implemented number 7: training. It's made all the difference in my eyes. Let's be among the first to adopt all ten. We need a transformation of our society to end racism. We especially need independent investigations of the police. We still have a very long way to go to achieve justice. JoinCampaignZero.org.
