It is clear that we need extensive criminal justice reform in this country. Statistically, black and brown folks are more likely to be harassed and arrested by police, tried by district courts, and harshly sentenced by judges. It is time for this to stop. Petty drug and nonviolent crimes should be decriminalized and strong mental health and addiction services should be funded instead. The police need to be held accountable for their actions by the community they serve with risk of arrest or termination for malfeasance. The criminal justice system must continue to follow evidence based practices, and the research needs to continue as needs change and arise.
