Reject vouchers, fully fund equitable public education

To: Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. Flores, Rep. Slawson, Gov. Abbott

From: A verified voter in Copperas Cove, TX

February 5

I strongly believe that providing public funds through voucher programs to private schools would be detrimental to our education system and society. Vouchers divert desperately needed resources away from public schools that serve the vast majority of students. This undermines efforts to improve public education and exacerbates existing inequalities. Numerous studies have shown that vouchers do not lead to better academic outcomes, especially for disadvantaged students. In fact, voucher programs have frequently resulted in declining test scores. Rather than improving education through competition as proponents claim, vouchers create an uneven playing field favoring affluent families who can afford expensive private school tuition even without vouchers. Public education is a civic responsibility and a great equalizer in our society. It deserves our full financial support and commitment to provide high-quality education accessible to all children, regardless of background. I urge you to reject voucher schemes that defund and dismantle our public school system under the guise of "school choice." True choice means having excellent public schools in every community. Please prioritize investing in our public education infrastructure and addressing underlying issues like inequitable funding, rather than pursuing privatization.
