I'm writing in response to Mike Lee's Interstate Obscenity Definition Act. Over the past two years, there has been a disturbing lack of concern for the First Amendment and for precedent in the Supreme Court when it comes to sexual and non-sexual expression. As a citizen, I am disappointed and dismayed at this continuing theme of allowing lawful speech to be chilled or censored as long as it's 'for the children'. Kids are being deported during cancer treatments, they are being separated from their parents, their access to food stamps and healthcare is being cut off, schools are running out of funding, the Department of Education is shutting down, libraries and bookstores are under attack, autistic kids are being put on a registry, kids in other nations experiencing poverty are dying from lack of food and resources, and girls as young as 10 years old are being married off without their consent to much older men. Is pornography really the greatest threat to children in this country? I am not arguing for exposing kids to adult material. I am, however, arguing that age verification, redefinitions of obscenity, book bans, porn bans and censorship do nothing but make it harder for adults to access this content. Who does this bill benefit? Not victims of sexual abuse. Not sexually assaulted and trafficked kids and women. Not abused men. Not anyone except the special interest groups that dislike the thought of sex. Oppose this bill.
