Defend Democracy — Oppose the SAVE Act

To: Rep. Jeffries, Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand

From: A constituent in Brooklyn, NY

March 18

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the SAVE Act, now before the Senate. This legislation represents a direct threat to the fundamental right to vote and a deeply troubling attempt to manipulate the rules of our democracy for partisan gain. Let’s be clear about what this bill does. By imposing new and burdensome proof-of-citizenship requirements and other barriers to registration, the SAVE Act will make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to vote. These kinds of restrictions disproportionately impact working people, seniors, students, and communities who may not have easy access to the specific documentation required. It is a solution in search of a problem — there is no credible evidence of widespread non-citizen voting that would justify such sweeping and restrictive measures. This is not about election security. It is about voter suppression. At a time when Americans are already frustrated with rising costs, political dysfunction, and a lack of responsiveness from their leaders, the answer should be to expand access to the ballot — not restrict it. Instead, this legislation appears designed to shape the electorate itself, making it harder for certain Americans to participate in the democratic process. The timing is not coincidental. With midterm elections approaching and widespread dissatisfaction with the direction of the country, this bill reads as a transparent attempt to tilt the playing field rather than earn public support. That is not how a healthy democracy functions. Efforts to make voting more difficult echo some of the darkest chapters in our nation’s history. The United States has spent generations working to expand and protect the right to vote. Rolling back access now, under the guise of “integrity,” undermines that progress and erodes trust in our democratic institutions. Congress must reject this approach. I urge you to take the following actions: • Oppose the SAVE Act in the Senate and vote against any effort to advance it. • Publicly call out this legislation for what it is: an attempt to restrict access to the ballot and disenfranchise eligible voters. • Defend and strengthen federal protections for voting rights, ensuring that every eligible American can participate in free and fair elections. • Resist any political pressure to weaken democratic norms or compromise the integrity of our electoral system. The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy. Any effort to restrict that right — especially for political advantage — must be met with firm and unified opposition. The American people deserve a government that earns their votes, not one that tries to limit who gets to cast them.
