Oppose HUD Rule Denying Housing Aid to Mixed-Status Families

To: Sen. Cantwell, Sen. Murray, Rep. Randall

From: A verified voter in Bremerton, WA

April 5

I need you to oppose the Trump administration's proposed HUD rule that would bar entire households from receiving federal housing assistance if even one member is undocumented. This policy will displace tens of thousands of people, including U.S. citizen children, and force families to choose between housing and staying together. For decades, mixed-status families have received prorated assistance calculated only for eligible members. This new rule eliminates that practice entirely and goes further by requiring housing providers to report undocumented residents to immigration authorities. The reporting requirement will create a chilling effect that discourages immigrant families from seeking any housing help, even for their citizen children. The consequences will be severe. Homelessness will increase. Families will be separated. U.S. citizen kids will lose their homes because of their parents' status. Cities like Los Angeles are already moving to oppose this rule because they know it will overwhelm local social services when displaced families have nowhere else to turn. This policy punishes children who are American citizens for circumstances beyond their control. Vote against this rule and protect housing stability for vulnerable families.
