Protect the Constitution and the Amendment Process

To: Sen. Markey, Rep. Neal, Sen. Warren

From: A constituent in Westfield, MA

March 31

am writing to you because I am concerned about the growing trend of trying to reinterpret or work around parts of the Constitution instead of following the constitutional amendment process. Regardless of political party or specific policy issue, the Constitution is supposed to be stable and difficult to change for a reason. If major constitutional rights and definitions can be changed through reinterpretation, executive action, or ordinary legislation instead of through the amendment process, then the Constitution stops being a stable foundation and becomes something that can be gradually changed depending on who is in power. The amendment process exists so that major changes to rights and constitutional definitions require broad national agreement, not temporary political majorities. If we begin allowing constitutional meaning to shift without amendments, it sets a dangerous precedent that future governments could use to weaken other rights as well. This is bigger than any one issue. It is about maintaining the integrity of the Constitution and the rule of law. If changes need to be made to the Constitution, they should be made through the amendment process as intended by the founders, not through reinterpretation or policy changes that effectively rewrite constitutional protections. I am asking you to defend the Constitution, the amendment process, and the long-term stability of our constitutional system, regardless of political pressure or short-term goals.
