Upholding the Constitution and Addressing DHS Overreach

To: Rep. Kelly, Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Erie, PA

January 27

I am writing as a concerned constituent who supports lawful and humane immigration efforts, and who believes deeply in the principles of the United States Constitution. Recent actions carried out by federal immigration enforcement—particularly those reported in Minneapolis—reflect a troubling pattern of overreach and brutality that demands your attention and leadership. The Constitution you swore an oath to support and defend guarantees rights to people, not solely to citizens. When enforcement practices disregard due process, proportionality, and basic human dignity, they undermine that oath and erode public trust in our institutions. The deaths of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and others are a sobering reminder that unchecked power within an overfunded Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency can have irreversible consequences. These are not abstract policy debates; they are real human lives lost, families shattered, and communities left fearful and divided. I urge you to publicly call out these abuses and to advocate for meaningful oversight and reform. This includes reining in the Department of Homeland Security, ensuring accountability for misconduct, and reaffirming that constitutional protections apply to all people within our borders. Our nation is strongest when our laws are enforced justly and our values are upheld consistently. I hope you will use your voice and authority to represent the people you serve and to act in defense of the Constitution—not only in word, but in action. Thank you for your time and for your service. I look forward to seeing principled leadership in this critical moment.
