I am writing to express my deep concern and opposition to President Trump's unilateral decision to demolish the White House East Wing for a $300 million privately-funded ballroom. This action represents a grave overreach of presidential authority and a threat to our nation's historical heritage.
The White House, as public property overseen by the National Park Service, should not be subject to drastic alterations without proper oversight and approval. President Trump's claim that he can proceed with "zero zoning conditions" is deeply troubling and appears to circumvent established processes, including review by the National Capital Planning Commission.
The proposed 90,000 square foot ballroom, nearly twice the size of the main White House, would irreversibly alter the character and historical significance of this national landmark. The involvement of 37 private donors, including major corporations, raises serious questions about conflicts of interest and the potential privatization of public spaces.
While the White House may be exempt from the National Historic Preservation Act's review requirements, this does not grant the President carte blanche to make sweeping changes to a building that belongs to all Americans. The justification of needing a larger space for events does not outweigh the historical and cultural value of the existing structure.
I urge you to take immediate action to halt this demolition and initiate a thorough review of the project. We must establish clear guidelines for White House alterations that respect its historical integrity and ensure proper oversight. The American people deserve transparency and a voice in decisions that affect our national treasures.
Please act swiftly to protect the White House from this unprecedented and potentially illegal alteration. Our nation's history and the integrity of our public institutions are at stake.
