Stop Detaining Innocent People – Demand Accountability from ICE

To: Sen. Tuberville, Sen. Britt, Rep. Strong

From: A constituent in Madison, AL

July 3, 2025

I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage over the current direction of immigration enforcement in our country—specifically, the disproportionate detention of individuals who pose no documented threat to public safety. According to recent ICE detention statistics published on their own website (June 2025 Detention Stats), we are witnessing a disturbing shift in priorities that contradicts both the stated goals of immigration enforcement and basic principles of justice. In Alabama alone, 58 human beings who are classified by ICE as having no threat level are currently being detained—compared to just 2 individuals who are considered actual threats. These are people with no criminal records, no history of violence, and no reason to be treated as criminals. Yet they are being jailed, separated from families, and subjected to life-altering trauma. This is not an isolated trend. Nationally, in January 2025, 62% of ICE detainees were convicted criminals, and just 6% had no criminal record. As of June 2025, those numbers have changed drastically: only 36% are convicted criminals, while 30% are people with no criminal history. That’s a nearly fivefold increase in non-criminal detentions in just six months. The Republican Party has long claimed to support deporting dangerous criminals—not law-abiding immigrants. So why are more and more people being detained who have committed no crime other than being here? This looks less like justice and more like racial profiling and political theater. We are not safer. We are not upholding the law. We are violating civil rights, wasting taxpayer dollars, and inflicting unnecessary harm on people who contribute to our communities. I urge you to investigate this disturbing trend, hold ICE accountable, and push for humane, just immigration enforcement. We should be targeting real threats—not families, workers, and innocent individuals who have done nothing wrong. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I hope you will stand on the right side of history and take action.
