Defend Medical Organizations Supporting Gender-Affirming Care

April 3

Stand with the AMA and other medical organizations facing political intimidation for supporting evidence-based gender-affirming care. Twenty Republican attorneys general, led by Steve Marshall, are threatening the AMA with investigation for maintaining its decade-long position on this care. Six states have already made it a felony for doctors to provide this treatment, and hospitals nationwide are closing gender clinics under federal pressure. Gender-affirming healthcare for children is lifesaving healthcare. Multiple studies show that access to puberty blockers and hormone therapy significantly decreases depression and anxiety in trans youth. These treatments require mental health assessments and parental consent. Surgery is extremely rare for minors and already deferred to adulthood in nearly all cases, consistent with WPATH guidelines and the AMA's current position. Medical decisions belong between doctors, patients, and families. When politicians threaten professional medical associations with investigations for supporting evidence-based care, they're practicing medicine without a license. The Endocrine Society and American Academy of Pediatrics are already under federal investigation simply for following the science. Doctors, not politicians, should determine appropriate medical treatment.
