Vote no on any extension of Section 702 of FISA when it comes up for a vote after the current April 30 deadline. This warrantless surveillance program violates the privacy rights of Americans every single day.
Section 702 allows the government to collect communications of people outside the U.S. when they interact with Americans, all without a warrant. Sen. Ron Wyden is right that Americans understand there are abuses of this program happening constantly. We don't need a five-year extension or even an 18-month extension. We need this program to end or be fundamentally reformed with real safeguards before any reauthorization.
The intelligence community always claims these programs are vital, but protecting national security cannot come at the expense of constitutional rights. If the government wants to surveil Americans, it should get a warrant like the Fourth Amendment requires. I expect you to stand up for privacy and vote against extending Section 702 without major reforms that prevent warrantless surveillance of U.S. citizens.
