End the Iran War Now—Reject Funding and Confront Illegal Escalation
To: Rep. Jeffries, Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand
From: A constituent in Brooklyn, NY
April 3
I am writing to demand immediate action to end U.S. involvement in the war in Iran and to oppose any funding that would sustain or escalate this conflict. In the past 48 hours, the situation has become even more alarming—not more justified. The President has now attempted to publicly defend this war weeks after it began, offering broad claims about security threats but still providing no clear evidence, no defined objectives, and no explanation of what success looks like. This comes far too late and does nothing to address the central issue: this war was launched without congressional authorization and continues without a coherent strategy. At the same time, the administration appears increasingly unstable. Reports of internal disruption within the Pentagon, leadership shakeups, and conflicting public messaging point to a lack of control at the highest levels of decision-making. That is deeply dangerous in the context of an active and expanding war. Meanwhile, the conflict itself continues to escalate across multiple fronts, with sustained strikes and counterstrikes increasing the likelihood of a broader regional war and placing civilians at ever greater risk. Critically, this war is now being challenged on serious legal grounds. A broad group of international law experts—including former senior U.S. legal officials—have publicly warned that the initiation of this conflict likely violated international law, citing the absence of authorization and the failure to meet the standards required under the U.N. Charter. They have also raised alarm about the conduct of the war itself, pointing to credible evidence of strikes impacting civilian sites and the growing risk that U.S. actions could constitute violations of international humanitarian law, including potential war crimes. This should set off alarm bells in Congress. When the United States disregards the legal frameworks designed to limit war and protect civilians, it does not just create immediate harm—it undermines the rule of law globally and erodes protections that ultimately safeguard everyone. The damage being done now will reverberate for years. The economic consequences are already being felt, with global energy markets destabilizing and costs rising for ordinary people. The environmental impact of sustained military operations—particularly strikes on infrastructure and industrial systems—will be severe and long-lasting. And still, the administration is preparing to request an extraordinary level of funding—reportedly around $200 billion—to continue this war. At a time when Americans are struggling under rising costs of living—housing, food, energy, healthcare—this represents a profound misuse of public resources. While working people are asked to absorb higher costs and reduced support, vast sums are being directed toward an escalating conflict with no clear justification. Americans do not want this war. It is widely opposed, deeply unpopular, and increasingly seen for what it is: an illegal and immoral escalation carried out without authorization and without public consent. Congress cannot continue to stand by. I urge you to: • Publicly and unequivocally oppose any funding for the war in Iran. • Vote against any appropriations that would sustain or expand this conflict. • Demand full transparency and accountability regarding civilian harm and potential violations of international law. • Reassert Congress’s constitutional authority and take action to end unauthorized military engagement. • Call for immediate de-escalation and a diplomatic resolution. • Use your platform to clearly communicate the legal, moral, and human costs of this war to the American people. This is a moment that demands leadership. Continuing down this path will only deepen the damage—costing lives, destabilizing the region, and undermining the rule of law. This war is illegal. It is immoral. And it must end now.
