I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to address Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Ypsilanti and throughout Michigan. Federal immigration officers recently targeted parents at a school bus stop during student drop-off in Ypsilanti, according to Washtenaw County Sheriff Alyshia M. Dyer. This operation has caused significant fear and distress in our community, and I believe it requires your urgent attention.
Conducting immigration enforcement at schools undermines the safety and wellbeing that every family deserves. Parents should be able to take their children to school without fear of arrest. These tactics create lasting trauma for children who witness their parents being detained and destabilize entire communities. When families are afraid to participate in basic activities like school drop-off, educational outcomes suffer and community trust in public institutions erodes.
Michigan communities depend on immigrant families who contribute to our economy, attend our schools, and strengthen our neighborhoods. Aggressive enforcement operations like the one in Ypsilanti do not enhance public safety. They tear apart families, disrupt local economies, and force local law enforcement to divert resources away from actual public safety priorities. Sheriff Dyer's public statement about this incident demonstrates that local officials recognize the harm these operations cause to Michigan residents.
I respectfully ask you to take concrete action to protect Michigan families. Please use your authority to call for ICE and Customs and Border Protection to cease enforcement operations in our state, particularly near schools and other sensitive locations. I encourage you to introduce or support legislation that prohibits federal immigration enforcement at schools, healthcare facilities, and places of worship. Please work with local officials to ensure that state and local resources are not used to support federal immigration raids.
Our communities need your leadership on this issue. I would appreciate a response detailing what specific steps you will take to protect Michigan families from these enforcement operations.
