Our national forests are invaluable natural resources that provide immense ecological and recreational benefits. They are home to countless plant and animal species, serve as carbon sinks to mitigate climate change, and offer opportunities for outdoor activities that promote public health and well-being. The executive order to expand logging across 280 million acres of public lands poses a grave threat to these precious ecosystems. Cutting down vast swaths of forests, particularly those containing old-growth trees, will not only accelerate habitat loss and biodiversity decline but also exacerbate the very problem it claims to address - wildfire risk. Numerous scientific studies have shown that aggressive logging can create hotter, drier conditions that increase the likelihood and severity of wildfires, putting communities at greater risk. Furthermore, circumventing the Endangered Species Act to expedite logging projects is a blatant disregard for the law and a disservice to the hundreds of vulnerable species that depend on these habitats for survival. It is our responsibility to protect and preserve these natural wonders for future generations. I urge you to take immediate action to safeguard our national forests from this destructive executive order. Enact legislation to reinstate protections for old-growth forests, strengthen enforcement of environmental regulations, and prioritize sustainable forest management practices that balance conservation and responsible resource utilization.
