I am writing to express deep concern over recent actions by ICE in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, and the alarming rhetoric from the federal government suggesting major U.S. cities could become “military training grounds.” During the raid, agents reportedly broke down doors in a residential building, deployed a Black Hawk helicopter insertion, separated families, detained U.S. citizens without clear explanation, and caused destruction to private property. Neighbors described scenes of trauma—children crying, individuals zip-tied, and agents “treat[ing] us like we were nothing.” What concerns me most is that these tactics echo patterns of militarized policing and suggest a willingness to bypass constitutional guardrails. The suggestion that cities might serve as proving grounds for troops turns normal neighborhoods into zones of fear, not justice. In Georgia, this is not just “someone else’s fight.” We must guard against the normalization of unchecked federal force operating in our cities and neighborhoods. I urge you to: Oppose any legislative or executive push to deploy military forces domestically without strict oversight and limits. Support investigations into abuses of civil liberties in ICE operations, including detainment of citizens and use of force. Co-sponsor or back legislation that reinforces protections under the Posse Comitatus Act and ensures military or National Guard units cannot be used as domestic police proxies. Call for transparency and accountability—require clear justification, independent review, and public reporting whenever federal operations enter civilian zones. It is essential that members of Congress take a stand now. The line between “law enforcement” and “occupation” must not be blurred. I appreciate your attention to this urgent matter.
